Fishtrap welcomes its 2019 Writer in Residence, Susan DeFreitas to Wallowa County.
How do storytellers reveal the world around us—and our place within it? In this afternoon workshop, we’ll focus on writing as a tool for developing and deepening our sense of place, gaining tools for both “seeing and saying” what often goes unnoticed in the rush of our daily lives. Appropriate for seasoned writers and curious newcomers alike, this class will incorporate elements of natural history, Transcendentalism, and contemporary literature of the West.
Susan DeFreitas has never been able to choose between fantasy and reality, so she lives and writes in both. This is why we think she’s a perfect choice to join us during our Year of Ursula celebration! Susan is the author of the novel Hot Season, which won the 2017 Gold IPPY Award for Best Fiction of the Mountain West; her fiction, nonfiction, and poetry has been featured in the Writer’s Chronicle, the Huffington Post, the Utne Reader, Story Magazine, Daily Science Fiction, and High Desert Journal, along with numerous other journals and anthologies. In 2017, The Oregonian named her “One of 25 Oregon Authors Every Oregonian Must Read.”
