Wallowa County
Wallowa County was established on February 11, 1887, out of the eastern portion of Union County. Wallowa County is located in the Northeast corner of Oregon and has a population of 7,226. The County comprises 3,153 square miles, has a population density of 2.28 persons per square mile, and an estimated per capita assessed value of $61,844/person for the year 2000.
The County borders Idaho on the east and Washington on the north. Umatilla and Union Counties are to the west and Baker County is to the south. Hells Canyon, the Wallowa Mountains and the Eagle Cap Wilderness are prominent geographic features of the County as are the Grande Ronde, Wallowa, Lostine and Snake Rivers.
Federal, State and local governments are the largest employers in the County. There are four incorporated cities: Enterprise, Joseph, Lostine, and Wallowa. Outside of the incorporated cities are the small communities of Flora, Imnaha, Minam, Troy, and the Wallowa Lake community.
The City of Enterprise serves as the Wallowa County seat. In addition to being the county seat, Enterprise is the location for the new Wallowa Memorial Hospital.
